Globalization is the process via which organizations develop relationships with other organizations beyond the shores of their countries. It can also be defined as the word used to describe the growth independence for the world’s population consequent of cross-border relationships in various areas, including commerce investment and education.

Globalization brings up after the exchange and movement of technologies, capital, services, and humans. Globalization makes it very easy for people to communicate with one another without any borders or separation. It equally makes it easy to transact business from one part of the globe to another without going through the stress of yesteryears.

Globalization impact on education

As a result of globalization, a business entity or organization in a place like Nigeria can communities and relate very easily with any other organization from across the globe. Globalization has touched virtually every aspect, including education.  It enables education institutions in Nigeria to relate with others outside the country very easily.

These institutions can relate as it they are located in the same vicinity.  They can equally send instant messages to each other. In a word, globalization has turned the world into a global village where people can connect with anybody at any time, for that matter, hassle-free.

Internet and globalization

The internet remains the most visible of all the aspects of globalization. We can as well say there can never be anything like globalization without the internet.  The internet is the driving force that keeps globalization in place, and globalization even came to be from the moment the internet was founded.

Imagine what will happen today if the internet goes off for one reason or the other. It means the entire world will be thrown into “darkness”; the darkness meant here is the information darkness where one will be unable to get any information about anything going on worldwide.

How globalization affects education in Nigeria

The three periods of globalization, according to Friedman, are:

  • Globalization 1 between 1492 and 1800
  • Globalization 2 between 1800 and 2000
  • Globalization 3 from the year 2000 to date.

This means that globalization has grown through different stages, and its effect on education has also grown as it moves from one stage to another. Several theories about globalization came up in the 1970s, leading to the development of perspectives, approaches, and theories about the subject matter.

The third world countries, of which Nigeria is one, have benefited a great deal from globalization.  It helps to connect the country to advanced countries allows Nigerian students to benefit from the advanced learning opportunities that prevail in those other countries.  In the next section of this write-up, we will show you some of the advantages of globalization to education in Nigeria.

Access to modern education

Globalization exposes the Nigerian education system to modernization. Thanks to globalization, Nigerian education authorities get easily informed about practices obtain in advanced countries, and they also realize the benefits of such modern practices. This encourages education institutions in Nigeria to adopt those modern teaching methods to enable them to record similar benefits.

The global reach of Nigerian institutions

Thanks to globalization on the wings of the internet, it is now possible for Nigerian education institutions to have a global presence. As a result, these institutions can easily let the world know about their existence and what they have to offer.  This way, any individual residing in another country but who wants to attend a Nigerian school can easily make his pick among the ones available on the World Wide Web.

Nigerian education institutions charge international students a higher fee than their local counterparts. They equally charge these international students in foreign currencies. As a result, they can earn foreign exchange, which will help boost the economy of the institution and boost the value of the naira.

When more international students seek admission into a Nigerian institution, there will be more demand for the Naira, and the law of demand and supply will set in, pushing the value of the Naira up the ladder. Consequently, both the educational institutions and the country will benefit from the impact of globalization.

Unified education standard

Globalization can cause unification in education standards.   Institutions in Nigeria will be able to see what other institutions across the globe are up to, and they can streamline theirs to be of the same standard.

The standardization will make it easy for any student from a Nigerian school to easily gain admission into any other institution across the globe since their standards would be harmonized. Thanks to globalization, Nigerian students can also benefit from what their foreign counterparts are getting.  It can help education authorities modify their systems to bring things up to the same standard as what obtains elsewhere.

Learn from home

Gone are the days when you have to leave the comfort of your home before you can attend school and get educated. These days, it is possible to get adequately educated from the comfort of your home. You do not have to travel to oxford before you can be registered as a student there; you can connect with the institution while you are in Nigeria from the comfort of your home via the internet.  This is made possible by globalization.

The foreign institutions can even award you a degree from home, and the degree will be as valid as what you would have gotten if you had attended the physical classroom in that particular foreign institution. You can receive lecturers via the internet just like any of the other students in that institution.

All you need to do is connect to the internet via tech devices, like a computer; it can be a desktop computer, laptop, or iPad. So long as the device is connected to the internet, then you are good to go.

There is no limit to which category of the institution can take advantage of globalization today. Both government-owned and private institutions can benefit from it. Primary, secondary and tertiary institutions can equally take advantage of it. Globalization has successfully created a level playing ground for everyone.
