Benue State University is a state-owned university in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. In 2006, student enrollment was over 19,000 served by 7 faculties, 23 departments. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs with a catalog of over 58 graduate programs across 9 colleges/faculties. It is accredited by the National Universities Commission. The current Vice-chancellor of Benue State University is Professor Msugh Moses Kembe who took over from Professor Charity Angya on November 5, 2015.

The mission of the University was clearly defined in the stated objectives as contained in the Edict establishing the University thus:
1. To encourage and promote advancement of knowledge and to hold out to all persons without discrimination of race, creed or political conviction, the opportunity of acquiring University education;
2. To encourage the effective application of higher education to the needs of the State through research and extension and consultancy
3. To provide ready access for Benue State Citizens to higher education for self-reliance
4. To promote, preserve and propagate the social and cultural heritage of the diverse people of the state and
5. To engage in any other activities of a developmental University of the highest standard.
HISTORY OF BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY
Benue State University was established by the Benue State Government with the enactment of the Benue State University Edict No. 1 of 1991.
The University took off in the 1992/93 academic year with four faculties, namely, Arts, Education, Science and Social Sciences. Two Faculties, Law and Management Sciences came on stream in the 1993/94 academic year with Faculty of Environmental Sciences in the 2014/2015 academic session.
The post graduate school took off in the 1998/1999 academic year while the College of Health Sciences was established in the 2003/2004 academic session. The College has graduated three sets of Medical Doctors since 2015 and more will be graduated in subsequent years as the University Management and State Government are committed to ensuring that Medical Students graduate within record time.
The University took off Nineteen years ago during the tenure of Late Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu as Executive Governor of Benue State. Adasu, therefore became the first Visitor of the University.

BSUM HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION
Currently, the Benue State University, Makurdi BSUM accommodation hostel fee is between N10, 000 to N15, 000.
The fee may change as time goes on, but be rest assured that we would update you even if it changes.
Benue State University, Makurdi BSUM Hostel Accommodation has certain rules governing the activities of students in the hostel.
The rules are implemented to sanitized and make sure the hostel activities are going on. Such rules includes;
· Students are not permitted to use high power consume and dangerous appliance such as gas cooker/cylinder, iron, hitter etc.
· Students are strictly not allowed to design or write anything on the wallpapers of either their rooms or hostel premises
· Students are strictly not allowed to goes into their opposite gender hostel i.e. Male students aren’t allowed to visit or enter female students hostel.
· While student parents’ decided to visit their children in the hostel, they should note that security officers in charge would search them.
· Students are warned to desist from any kind of group that teaches or practices violence like cult and others.
STUDENT LIFE
Paramount attention is given to the health of students and members of staff of the University. It is in the light of this that the University has made provision for a Standard Health Center. Equipped with standard human and health resources, the health center is strategically located at the heart of the campus.
The need to ensure her students and staff keep high levels of physical fitness while within the University could not be better expressed. The University also made provision of a sports complex. At this complex, interested scholars can make a choice among the available sports, including Soccer, Basketball, and Lawn or Table Tennis.
