Magnesium stearate, often known as Mg(C18H35O2)2, is a chemical substance having the formula Mg(C18H35O2)2. It's a soap made up of two stearate (stearic acid's anion) and one magnesium cation (Mg2+) equivalents in a salt. Magnesium stearate is a powder that is white and insoluble in water.

Its softness, insolubility in a wide range of solvents, and low toxicity are all used in its applications. It's utilised in the manufacturing of medications and cosmetics as a releasing agent and as a component or lubricant.

It is considered to be safe for human consumption at levels below two thousand, five thousand (2,500) mg per kilogramme per day.

Magnesium stearate has characteristics such as softness, insolubility in solvesnts and low toxicity. Numerous advantages of using magnesium stearate such as improve the consistency and quality control of medication capsules, used as a release agent & lubricant in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, used as a filler in solid dosage forms, among others.

Stearic acid is an integral substance forming the chemical compounds which found in various foods such as chocolate, chicken, eggs, salmon, cheese, and others. One of the common uses of magnesium stearate is, it is added to various cosmetic products, pharmaceuticals, and food.

The global market for Magnesium Stearate estimated at US$479.5 Million in the year 2020, is projected to reach a revised size of US$752.6 Million by 2027, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of six point seven percent (6.7%) over the analysis period 2020-2027.

The rapid growth of the pharmaceuticals sector in Asia-Pacific (APAC), along with the increasing consumption of the compound in the personal care sector, is one of the major factors promoting the growth of the global Magnesium Stearate industry.

Metallic Stearates are used as additives in chemical industries, so as to import certain specific characteristics in product formulations.  Important industries using stearates are given below:

> Paints and Varnishes,
> Cement paints
> Leather lacquers and sanding sealers.
> Manufacture of compound for PVC Pipes
> Rubber Industry
> Cosmetics Industry
> Pharmaceuticals
> Engineering Industries (wire drawing)
> Soap Industry.
> Tooth Paste

The primary use of magnesium stearte is as a pharmaceutical excipient, which means it is among the FDA list of 40 official categories of
excipients. It is used as a glidant or granulating agent. A good number of chemical industries in the field of Pharmaceuticals, paints and varnishes, cement paints, cosmetics, PVC pipes manufacture etc. have come into existence throughout the country.

Nigeria with her current population estimated at over two hundred million (200,000,000) growing at a rate of two point four percent (2.4%) per annum has a large market for magnesium stearte hence sett-up a magnesium stearte plant in Nigeria would be a viable business.
